Guidelines for using Baltic Exchange information in the media

The Baltic Exchange and Baltic Exchange Information Services Ltd are keen to see the Baltic indices widely reported within the print and broadcast media.

No matter how the information is delivered, and notwithstanding contractual and copyright restrictions which might be imposed, whether originating with the immediate source or carried through from the Baltic Exchange, unless specifically notified to the contrary, all such media are licensed to use Baltic Exchange data as follows:

Index and route rates may be reported routinely within the text of stories as a news item or market report, provided that the use of such indices is sufficiently irregular that it does not, in the sole opinion of the Baltic, threaten its revenues. In every case the name of the index (eg Baltic Exchange Dry Index) must be used in full at least once, with abbreviations permissible thereafter.

The above definition is not intended to authorise the routine and regular tabulation of any index data. More extensive use of Baltic Exchange data such as this is subject to a separate licence arrangement.

Quotations from the Baltic Exchange daily fixture list may be published on the same basis and according to the same restrictions as above.

The Baltic also welcomes the use of charts of indices and routes for illustration in these media provided they are always clearly attributed to the Baltic Exchange and the copyright is acknowledged (eg Baltic Exchange Dry Index, Copyright Baltic Exchange Information Services Ltd).

Where print publications have an on-line version, extra care must be taken to ensure that Baltic Exchange revenues are not threatened by a focus on timely or systematic reproduction of the indices. In addition, graphical representation of index movements must be presented in such a format as to prevent the download of the data to user applications which could then save, store or further manipulate the data.

The broadcast media (TV and radio) are authorised to make such use of the indices as is appropriate for bona fide purposes of reporting the shipping markets, provided always that the name of the Baltic Exchange is routinely cited in the context of the data. Eg " The Baltic Exchange Dry Index stood at..." is acceptable, as is "the Dry Cargo Index from The Baltic Exchange…", while "the dry cargo index stood at…" is not acceptable.

Reproduction of the Baltic Exchange market reports is never appropriate as news organisations should develop their own copy, making use of the Baltic Exchange data as described above.
