Significant change to Baltic Exchange Dry Index

In a move designed to help boost derivative trading, the Baltic Exchange will be implementing changes to the way in which the Baltic Exchange Dry Index (BDI) is calculated. As of 1 July 2009, the BDI will be calculated taking the timecharter components of the Baltic’s capesize, panamax, supramax and handysize indices.

Stefan Albertijn, senior freight manager at Hamburg based commodity house Alfred C. Toepfer International has been appointed the chairman of the Baltic Exchange’s Freight Market Information Group (FMIUG) dry section.

Honorary Baltic Exchange Membership for Sammy Ofer

Shipping magnate and philanthropist Sammy Ofer, KBE was presented with honorary life membership of the Baltic Exchange last week (30 April 2009). Awarded in recognition of his hugely successful shipping career as well as his charitable contributions to the National Maritime Museum and Cutty Sark appeal, Mr Ofer was presented his award at a lunch at the Baltic Exchange.

Mark Jackson elected new Baltic Exchange Chairman

The Board of Directors of the Baltic Exchange has elected Mark Jackson of AM Nomikos to serve as its Chairman, and Paul Over to serve as Vice-Chairman. They will take office following the Annual General Meeting scheduled for 8 July 2009, when the present Chairman Michael Drayton steps down.

Baltic to publish port costs for tanker assessments

The Baltic Exchange will begin publishing the port costs used to calculate its daily time charter equivalent (TCE) assessments for the tanker market from 9 March.

2008 freight derivative trading volumes up

Figures compiled by the Baltic Exchange reveal that the volume of Forward Freight Agreement (FFA) trades increased in 2008. Dry trading volumes grew by 15% on the previous year whilst tanker FFA volumes were up 14%.
