BEGS triumphs over Japanese shipping team at William Adams Trophy

On Monday 14 September, West Herts Golf Course hosted another thrilling contest between the Baltic Exchange Golf Society (BEGS) and the London-based Japanese shipping community.
Captained by Mr. Ono of Sojitz/Somec, the Japanese team arrived eager for revenge following last year’s defeat, ready to take on the BEGS team after a hearty breakfast of bacon rolls. The Japanese side included representatives from KHI, IHI, Orix, NS United, Tsuneishi, Namura, CMP, and Mitsui E&S, while BEGS featured players from SSY, Drylog, Wah Kwong, Polaris Energy, Metz Maritime, Baltic Exchange, Cross Office, Embiricos, and Nomikos.
The course was in excellent condition, with wide fairways but fast, challenging greens, made even trickier by strong winds. Despite these conditions, both teams played competitively for the historic William Adams Trophy, awarded in honour of the first Englishman to land in Japan in 1600.
After a closely fought match, BEGS emerged victorious with a 6-4 win. The nearest the pin on the 9th hole was claimed by Jamie Freeland of Metz Maritime, while Mark Ravenscroft took home the longest drive prize.
Next year’s match is set for 21 September, likely at Fulwell Golf Club, and promises another day of competitive golf and networking opportunities for all.
