The Baltic Exchange Investor Indices (BII) listing gives shipowners, banks, family offices and funds an independent, daily benchmark for timing entry and exit in dry bulk and tanker shipping, assessed under a governance framework aligned to the IOSCO Principles for Financial Benchmarks. ​

The Baltic Investor Indices do for shipping what property yield metrics do for real estate. They transform a complex asset class into a transparent, standardised set of indicators that help investors assess return potential, value preservation, and downside risk.

The listing covers the following vessels and segments:

• Dry: Capesize, Panamax, Supramax and Handysize, plus generic dry bulk indicators.

• Tankers: VLCC, Aframax, Suezmax and MR

Yes. While only users with a Snowflake account can access the Baltic Exchange Investor Indices on the Snowflake Marketplace, the BII indices can also be accessed via our Market Data API .

Selecting “Get” creates a trial database in your account immediately, with no approval needed. Selecting “Request” asks for the complete dataset — Baltic Exchange will follow up directly to agree terms before granting full access.

• The trial listing provides access to a rolling 7-day sample of the latest BII index data for a period of 7 days. This is a live sample rather than a static export, allowing you to validate the data model and test your query patterns before making a commitment.

• The full access listing provides the complete historical dataset across all BII indices, together with ongoing incremental data updates. Access is provided separately through a Private Listing which our Sales department will arrange for you.

Use “Request” on the listing page rather than “Get”. Complete the forms with as much detail as possible and Baltic Exchange's Sales department will reach out to discuss commercial terms; once agreed, you're granted access under your own Snowflake account via the Private Listing.

Full access to BII is a commercial product. Billing isn't currently handled through Snowflake — Baltic Exchange invoices you directly under the terms agreed with you, separate from your Snowflake account billing.

Snowflake Marketplace's built-in checkout isn't currently used for BII. Pricing and contract terms are agreed directly with Baltic Exchange.
Once the BII listing is installed in your Snowflake account, any usage will charged by Snowflake as though this were any other dataset that you interact with in your account.

The BII listing appears as an ordinary database in your Snowflake account — query it with standard SQL from an existing virtual warehouse, the same way you'd query any of your own tables. No extract, load, or file transfer is required.

BII datasets refreshes automatically — there's no orchestration required and nothing you need to trigger — the data is auto-replicated to your Snowflake account. See the trial listing here for refresh frequency per index.

We have configured Change Data Tracking so you can use Snowflake Streams to see which records changed and when.

Yes. Because it's a live database inside your own Snowflake account, you can join it against your own tables in ordinary SQL, or run comparisons against your data with one or many index time series.

The BII includes the following indices.

• New Building Assessments: the price to buy a newly built vessel of that class.

• Second-Hand Valuation: weekly Sales and Purchases (S&P) broker assessments of a five-year-old vessel. 

• Recycling Values: sale price for recycling on the Asian Subcontinent. 

• Implied Five-Year Timecharters: from forward curves in the FFA (freight) market. 

• Spot Timecharter Earnings: from a basket of commonly traded routes. 

• Daily OPEX (BOPEX): crewing, insurance, stores, repairs and management fees. 

• Health of Earnings Index: scaled ratio of time charter earnings against operating costs. 

• Residual Value Index: written-down value of a five-year-old vessel after a five-year timecharter. 

• Residual Risk Index: recycling value against residual value.

Your account administrator will receive an automated email from address no-reply@snowflake.net which similar to “A private listing ‘x' has been shared with your account ‘y' by 'Baltic Exchange’”. Your account administrator can also check the External sharing within the Data Sharing section of Snowflake.

Yes. Snowflake automatically replicates the shared data to your region and cloud provider the first time you access it, which can take a short while on that very first request. After that, your queries run against a local copy with no ongoing delay.
