Thurlestone Shipping triumphs at Annual Company Cup Golf Day
This report was compiled by the Match Manager Mark Ravenscroft.
Some of the great and good of the shipping industry gathered at Fulwell Golf Club in leafy West London for the annual Company Cup. The weather threatened to put a dampener on things, but the rain mainly stayed away and everyone enjoyed the challenge that the magnificent F.G.C. posed. The greens were in fantastic condition and, despite the moisture in the air, were swift. Some even compared them to Bethpage Black.
Like the Ryder Cup, it was a hard-fought contest but played in a much more congenial spirit; no one threw beer at anyone (as far as I’m aware).
Just seven points separated the top seven teams.
Equal 6th on 64 points were Clarksons and Nomilog, 5th was The Baltic Exchange with 66. Tied on 67 points and in third place were SSY and AM Nomikos. One ahead on 68, and runners-up, were the holders, MakarNavis represented by Ed Preston and Sam Round.
But the winners on 70 points, and the new Company Cup champions, were (drumroll)...Thurlestone Shipping, represented by Peter Langsdale and Dan Smethurst. They were imperious, especially Peter who, playing off a handicap of 7, was round the back nine in level par gross. Impressive indeed. Dan was not too shabby either and they were deserved victors. Congratulations to them.
Winner of longest drive at the 14th hole was Henry Potter of Clarksons with an enormous hit of over 300 yards. Peter Langsdale won longest drive at the 17th with a similar distance. Nearest the pin prize (requiring much more skill and guile!) was won by Mark Ravenscroft of AM Nomikos at the 9th hole. Nearest the pin at the 16th hole was won by Michael Robins.
We sincerely hope to have a bigger field next year for this fantastic event. Fulwell Golf Club treated us royally both with a great course set up and delicious food.
