1837

At a general meeting on 5 May 1837 new rules for the Baltic were laid down. Former “Subscribers” were now termed “Members” and new Members were required a personal recommendation of another Member in order to join – his name and details would be displayed in the Book of Candidates along with the names of his proposer and seconder and all existing members had two weeks in which to lodge any objection to the membership. Rules were also established for the removal of a member, these being: business failure, non-payment of the Baltic Coffee House subscription, and unacceptable conduct. The reason of unacceptable conduct was the forerunner of the Baltic’s Code of Conduct.
