1920-1939

The 1920's recession hit the market hard and the price of both assets and freight plummeted. The depression of the 1930s resulted in 3.5 million tonnes of gross tonnage being laid up. Gradually the business of the Baltic floor moved from grain trading to ship chartering – with brokers now fixing employment for ships of all nationalities and becoming key intermediaries between shipowners and merchants around the globe.
