Baltic members will learn with deep regret of the death of former Baltic member Frank Anthony “Tony” Dawes who passed away on 4 July aged 83.

Following his Grammar School education, Tony joined the Royal Air Force for his two years National Service, before commencing his shipbroking career in January 1955 with the London office of Mollers’ Ltd., Hong Kong. Here, Tony was elected a member of the Baltic Exchange in 1957 and was elected a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers in 1960.

In 1966, Tony was invited to join the expanding Sale & Purchase division of H. Clarkson where he specialized in the Far East, secondhand and newbuilding contracts with the London Greek and Greek shipowners. In 1976, he resigned his executive directorship to establish his own Sale & Purchase broking company, and, in 1979, opened an office in Seoul to promote the sale of secondhand ships to South Korean owners and export South Korean newbuildings.

In 1988 Tony retired from the City to pursue his hobby of antiques and became a successful dealer in vintage watches. Then, in 2001, he and his wife, Lorraine, decided to buy a villa on the Italian Riviera to spend the rest of their twilight years in warmer climes.

Tony leaves Lorraine, his beloved wife of more than 60 years, two sons and five grandchildren.
