On 18 November, the Baltic hosted a distinguished luncheon at Wax Chandler’s Hall to welcome the new Lady Mayor of London, Dame Susan Langley, marking one of her first official engagements in office. The event brought together leaders from across London’s maritime and financial sectors for a three-course meal, speeches, and a symbolic exchange of gifts.

Dame Susan presented the Baltic with a crystal ball, while the Baltic made a charitable donation to support initiatives benefiting the maritime community, reinforcing the longstanding ties between London’s City institutions and the global shipping industry.

In his speech, Baltic Chairman Guy Hindley highlighted the quiet but vital role of the maritime sector in sustaining London’s global prominence. “Shipping connects the City to global trade and to every major maritime centre in the world. It is a sector that underpins global commerce and contributes to London’s reputation as a centre of excellence and innovation,” he said.

He also reflected on the Baltic’s growth and innovation over the years: “Individual membership has nearly doubled in the past decade to more than 5,500, with nearly 800 companies from 64 countries affiliated with the organisation. From the original Baltic Freight Index to the launch of the Baltic Air Freight Indices, our tradition of innovation continues, providing trusted data across the global transport sector.”

Guy praised Dame Susan’s career in insurance, risk management, and public service, noting how her values of integrity, expertise, and a global outlook align with those of the Baltic community. “Lady Mayor, we look forward to working with you in the year ahead,” he concluded.

The luncheon was a vivid reminder of the enduring partnership between London and its maritime industry, highlighting how expertise, innovation, and global connectivity continue to underpin the City’s strength in shipping, finance, law, insurance, and trade.
