Jin Yu Cheong, Head of Baltic Exchange Asia, spoke at the latest Japan Maritime Daily (JMD) Forum, held on 27 October at the SGX Building in Singapore.

The event, titled “Uncertainties in Shipping and New Transportation Demand”, brought together more than 150 representatives from across the maritime sector, including shipowners, operators, ship management companies, shipbuilders, marine equipment manufacturers, brokers, and financial institutions.

The forum explored the impact of escalating geopolitical tensions, supply chain shifts, and decarbonisation challenges on the global shipping industry. In his remarks, Jin took part in the closing panel discussion, addressing key issues such as shipping’s decarbonisation efforts and the implications of global sanctions, while highlighting the Baltic’s role in providing trusted market data, benchmarks, and insights that support the industry’s transition toward transparency and sustainability.

Other panellists included Peter Kolding (Hafnia), Fuyo Oji (MC Shipping), Jigo Hayashi (Tokyo Century), and Yasushi Seto (ClassNK - Nippon Kaiji Kyokai). The discussion was moderated by Yohei Misaki, senior editorial committee member of JMD.

The forum also featured a keynote address from Jotaro Tamura, Senior Managing Executive Officer at Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, who emphasised the growing strategic importance of Singapore and ASEAN amid intensifying US-China trade tensions.

The Japan Maritime Daily hosted the seminar with the cooperation of SGX Group and sponsorship from ClassNK and BainBridge Navigation.
