The Fehr cup took place once again at the Surbiton Racket & Fitness Club on a wonderfully hot day, Friday 20th June 2025 marking the 90th anniversary of the event.

See the photos from the day here.

We had a bumper entry of 18 pairs and spectators and players alike enjoyed top tier tennis on the grass and in the sunshine. Many Club Members commented how nice it was to see the predominance of white clothing too!

After a quick warm up and briefing around 1215, play commenced at 1230 and we could see from the start that this year was going to be competitive.

We organised everyone into three groups of six pairs playing a round robin competition, taking on each other pair within their group. To get though the multiple matches, we did 20-minute timed tennis. Whoever had the most games at the end of the 20-minute block would win the fixture. Regardless of who won, every game counted as a point in the overall running.

The winner of each group made it into the semi-finals leaving the final fourth spot in the semi to the ‘lucky losers’ who were the pair with the next highest score across all the groups.

Nick Young and Guy Hindley, representing Howe Robinson, were the first semi-finalists winning their group taking on Lauren Sproule & Sihan Guo, representing BRS, who were our ‘lucky losers’ having only lost one match in the group stage. A thrilling battle commenced but the Howe Robinson pair managed to win the key points taking the set 6-2 and proceeding into the final.

Oscar Podlewski & Maria Alexandroff, last year’s finalists from HFW, were straight back into the semi-final without losing a single game in their group stage. They took on Humphrey Coysh & Sam van der Gaag, representing Arrow, in the second semifinal. The HFW pair came out on top winning that set 6-1.

Whilst everyone else was enjoying the magnificent tea provided by the Club as well as making use of the bar, the final started on the show court. This year Oscar & Maria managed to secure the title winning 6-2, 6-1. It was a game of great tennis closer that the score suggests and also marks the first time a lady has won the title.

Congratulations too, are due to the Baltic Chairman for reaching the final. This must serve as the second record of the day as we think it is unlikely we have seen a Chairman competing, never mind reaching the final. Well done, Guy!

The magnificent Cup and prizes were presented by the Fehr Family to the winning team, with Champagne and wine being awarded to all semi-finalists.

Many then retired to the bar and enjoyed the evening sun after a very successful and enjoyable day.

Thanks due to the Baltic Racket Sports Club who were able to find so many pairs to play and a special thank you to Surbiton Club who were able to accommodate us once again.

The Fehr Cup is in safe hands as was shown by the interest generated, the standard of play and the spectators we had. Onto the next one and the next 10 years!

Thank you to all the other pairs that attended. We had representatives from:

MOL, Thurlestone, The Baltic, Howe Robinson, Shell, Clarksons, Bright Cook, Centrica, Tokyo Gas UK, Seasure Shipping, AM Nomikos, Arrow, BRS, HFW and SGX.
