Baltic Exchange Cricket Club secured a four-wicket victory over Lloyd’s at Chiswick Cricket Club on Thursday 30 July, in a match that provided an entertaining afternoon of cricket in the summer heatwave.

Skipper Charlie Aarons (Hartland) lost the toss and Baltic were asked to bowl, which ultimately proved a fortunate outcome. Tight bowling and sharp fielding brought a flurry of early wickets, with Henry Reynolds (BRS) and Charlie Russell (SSY) taking two wickets apiece.

The fielding was equally impressive, with the Baltic taking all five of their catches. The standout moment came from Jonty Barrie (SSY), who produced a spectacular boundary catch to keep the pressure firmly on Lloyd’s.

At the halfway stage, Lloyd’s were 93-6 and under pressure. Wickets continued to fall, but their captain Stewart launched a determined counter-attack, scoring 69 runs almost single-handedly to give his side a chance of posting a competitive total. However, Aarons stepped up with the final two wickets, conceding just four runs in the process, as Lloyd’s were bowled out for 161.

Chasing 162 for victory, Baltic lost both openers early on and briefly found themselves on the back foot until Nathan Roberts (Range) and Oscar Jago-Lewis (Hartland) took control, putting the chase firmly back on track.

The pair treated the Chiswick ground to a masterclass, including one spectacular strike that cleared the boundary, and the surrounding houses entirely. Both went on to retire on 50, by which point Baltic were comfortably ahead.

A few quick wickets from Lloyd’s briefly threatened to make the finish closer than expected, with the Baltic tail scrambling for their pads rather sooner than anyone would have liked. But Chris Symes (Clarksons), who contributed 10, and Charlie Russell, who finished unbeaten on 28, held their nerve to see Baltic home with four wickets to spare.

It was a thoroughly entertaining afternoon of cricket, with strong bowling and excellent fielding combining to secure another memorable result for the Baltic Exchange Cricket Club.
