Having enjoyed a warm and fun day at the course in 2025, Baltic Exchange Golf Society chose to kick off its 125th anniversary year at the same venue, which also is the home club of our President Robert Gemmell: Surbiton Golf Club.

Despite his absence, we headed in the spring sun to southwest London for the 2026 Spring Meeting.

First up in a three ball were this year’s Captain Peter Hirons along with Hon Treasurer Coxy and ex skipper Malcolm Wiggett. Age and youth followed with Les Hayes and his merry band of Nathan Ellisdon, Simon Cox and Mark Ravenscroft. The Last of the Summer Wine four ball of Henderson, Reeve-Wing, Reid and Palmer filled the middle slot, followed by Messrs Marsh, Oksuz, Crawford-Blunt and Whaler. Last and certainly not least were the young pups Mattocks, Barnes ,Janssen and Bird junior. Quite the list of talented shipping gentry!

Despite only 15 holes being available, due to course maintenance, the sun shone and amidst the warming smell of mown grass and the distant hum of the A3, much fun and laughter was shared and it was great to get out after the torrid winter weather we have endured. Scoring was tight and ended in a tie for first with 29 points from the 15 holes.

This year’s winner on a count back was Malcolm Wiggett who pipped the Captain. The wily Wiggo also grabbed a Nearest the Pin goody bag, along with Simon Cox and Chris Henderson. There was no longest drive hole (so the regular winners had to try some touch shots at the NTP!)

Now we turn our attention to the main part of our anniversary season as we look ahead to a sunny and enjoyable 125th year on and off the links.
